Myles’s pulse raced, and he quickly released her hand. He should have declined or said nothing and let her walk away, but the hope in her eyes had cut through him. And her chestnut tresses loose over her shoulders had been his undoing. Besides, friendship was innocent enough. Would it be so wrong to enjoy her company for the short time they would have alone?

“I should drop this off in the cabin before I forget.” Nora lifted the book then led the way up the path. “I love reading, but I simply haven’t had time with Papa’s leg doing so poorly.” Her shoulders slumped with her last words.

“What happened to his leg? To begin with, I mean.” Mr. Reid had been lame for as long as Myles remembered.

She slowed until he took up step beside her. “I was very young at the time, so I only remember what was told me. Back when we lived not far from Boston. Papa was clearing land for pay and had Daniel along to help haul smaller branches and such to be burned. Daniel was probably not more than ten and always tempting the fates. A tree was about to fall when Daniel dived under it. Racing gravity. Papa saw him after he’d cleared the trunk, but not the branches. He pushed Daniel out of the way of a particularly large one. Daniel made it through with barely scratch, but Papa’s leg was broken in two places and his knee...” She gave a slow, sad shake. “His knee never did heal properly.”

“But he came all this way and built a life for himself and your family.” Despite himself, Myles felt a twinge of respect for the man. A man who hadn’t let less than perfect circumstances dictate his life’s course.

“Yes, he did.” Pride shone in her eyes. She slipped into the cabin, returning a moment later empty-handed. “I was wondering…”

A wagon emerged through the trees, and Myles pulled her around the corner of the cabin.

“Daniel can’t be returning already.” Nora peeked around the edge and sighed with relief. She leaned into the log wall and smiled at him. “It’s only Mr. Lemond.”

The name thundered in Myles’s brain. He stole a glance.

“He bought one of our young hogs earlier today and said he planned to stop at the Garnets. I guess he has business with Daniel as well.” She moved as though to step into sight.

“No,” Myles hissed, grabbing her. Why had Lemond been at the Garnets’ home? Had Hannah any clue who this man was? Samuel couldn’t have forgotten. Myles swung Nora back against the wall with too much force.

Her eyes widened.

“If he sees you, he may tell Daniel you were here.” Myles tried to keep his hand steady as he brushed some hair back from her face. “Did I hurt you?”

Her head gave a small shake.

Relief was short lived. The wagon creaked and boots hit the ground. Myles leaned close and lowered his voice to a whisper. “Perhaps its better he not see either of us.
